Delhi-Jaipur Highway Choked After Heavy Rains Across NCR; Gurugram Road Caves In, Vehicles Stranded For Hours

Jagran Correspondent, New Delhi: Delhi-NCR on Tuesday received its first heavy monsoon rain. Heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms lashed many areas of the region, leaving roads submerged and severely disrupting traffic.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), some areas recorded more than 50 mm of rain in an hour, prompting yellow and red alerts. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel.

10-km traffic jam on NH-48, road cave in ner Narsinghpur

Meanwhile, a massive traffic jam was witnessed on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway (NH-48). The jam stretched for about 10 kilometres from Narsinghpur to Rajiv Chowk after heavy rains caused waterlogging on the roads.

Commuters were stuck in traffic jams for hours. The long queues caused significant inconvenience to office-goers. Vehicle breakdowns also occurred at several locations, further worsening the situation.

In another rain-related incident, a portion of the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, the continuous stretch of NH-48, caved in near Narsinghpur, forcing the immediate closure of two lanes.

This severely disrupted traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, leading to a long queue of vehicles from Hero Honda Chowk to the Kherki Daula toll plaza. Thousands of vehicles remained stuck in the traffic jam until evening.

Pipe laying work is underway using trenchless barrel (pipe jacking) technology to connect open drains built on both sides of the highway in Narsinghpur. Initial suspicion is that the collapse of the road occurred due to the weakening of the soil during construction and continuous heavy rainfall. However, the exact cause of the collapse is being investigated.

Service lane of Sohna-Gurugram Highway flooded

Heavy rainwater also inundated the service lane of the Sohna-Gurugram Highway in front of the Devi Lal Stadium in Sector 38, Gurugram. Several surrounding areas are also waterlogged, disrupting local traffic.

The administration is working to install pumps to drain the water, but the problem could worsen if the rain continues.

Speaking about the ordeal, a commuter said that it usually takes only 5 or 6 minutes to reach Rajiv Chowk from Gurugram and then Hero Honda Chowk, but today it took drivers about 45 minutes. There's no way to get out of this jam.
