The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has expressed its inability to tackle the problem of waterlogging on the road, asserting that the local administration was responsible for getting rid of the issue. The agency has also written to the Haryana government in this regard.
NHAI also suggested that an agency should be assigned the responsibility to look after the waterlogging issue by establishing a coordination between GMDA, municipal corporation and their agency, adding that they will pay for their share of expenditure.
For the past several years, the problem of waterlogging has become a serious issue at many places on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway in the Gurugram area. The problem is more severe in Narsinghpur. As soon as there is a slight rainfall, not only the service lane but also the expressway gets flooded. Water is removed using pumps and the process usually takes hours.
The biggest reason behind waterlogging on the road is the clogging of the drains due to garbage. The water from the road cannot flow into the drains due to this. Like Narsinghpur, waterlogging is common in Jharsa as well, where water up to two feet gets deposited in the service lane of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway during rains.
NHAI said people dump their household waste on the edge of drains, which flow inside during rains. The agency said it cannot launch a cleaning drive of drains every time, adding that the local authorities should take up the task.

“We have come across the issue of cleaning the drains built along the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. NHAI has said that the local administration should pay attention to it. NHAI will share the cost. Who does the work is not the issue. There should be no waterlogging. For this, the district administration and NHAI should coordinate with each other,” Gurugram MP and Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh said.
