The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to stay the ongoing criminal proceedings against JNU alumnus Sharjeel Imam in the Jamia violence case. The court also sought a response from the Delhi Police on Sharjeel Imam’s petition challenging the framing of charges.

A bench of Justice Sanjeev Narula was hearing Imam’s revision plea, which contested the trial court’s order and requested an interim stay. However, the bench declined to pass any interim order without hearing the prosecution and scheduled the next hearing for April 24.

The court issued a notice to the Delhi Police on Imam’s petition, which challenges the trial court’s ruling that labeled him as a key conspirator in the 2019 anti-CAA protests. Imam, represented by advocates Talib Mustafa and Ahmed Ibrahim, also filed an application seeking an interim stay on the trial court’s order.

Earlier this month, the trial court framed charges against Imam, Asif Iqbal Tanha, and nine others. The court found that Imam had not only delivered a speech inciting violence but was also involved in a broader conspiracy to provoke unrest.

The trial court noted that Imam, a PhD student, had structured his speech "cleverly" to incite hatred and stir communal tensions. The FIR against him alleges that 41 vehicles, including government and private ones, were damaged, and stones were hurled at police officers during the protests.
