Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G), VK Saxena has given the green light for the establishment of 10 additional Family Courts in the capital, following a 2019 Full Court recommendation. The new courts will be headed by 10 appointed judges and will also have 71 supporting staff members.
The decision is a timely response to the staggering backlog of cases in Delhi’s Family Courts, where about 46,000 cases are pending resolution. Some of these cases have been languishing for over a decade, creating a huge demand for family-related legal adjudications.
The expansion of the judicial infrastructure and workforce reflects a commitment to expediting justice and alleviating the strain on existing Family Courts.

The number of cases registered with Family Courts in Delhi is about 150-200 on an average daily basis. The pending cases vary from court to court, with the lowest being 1,321 with Principal Judge, Family Court, Saket; and the highest being 3,654 with Family Court, Rohini.
The establishment of 10 new Family Courts is expected to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the family justice system in Delhi and provide speedy and fair resolution of disputes involving matrimonial, child custody, maintenance and other family matters.
