The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to propose doubling parking charges, aiming to curb private vehicle use and reduce air pollution caused by emissions. An MCD official confirmed on Monday that this proposal will be presented at the upcoming MCD House meeting on November 14, coinciding with Delhi’s mayoral and deputy mayoral elections.

Initially, the MCD considered a fourfold increase in parking fees as part of Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), designed to combat air pollution. However, after discussions, the proposal has been modified to double the current rates.

''The MCD revised its proposal after extensive deliberation, seeking approval to increase parking charges twofold instead of fourfold,'' an official stated. Upon receiving approval, the revised fees would be implemented promptly.

The move aligns with the guidelines issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), under which other agencies like the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) have already increased parking charges. In October, the NDMC doubled its rates as per CAQM’s directives.

Despite these steps, the MCD awaits the House’s approval before implementing the hike. Officials noted that if the meeting faces disruptions, often a challenge during election periods, the proposal could see further delays.
