The much-anticipated Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) between Delhi and Meerut could begin operations from Delhi as early as January 2025, according to the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the agency overseeing the project. Trial runs are nearing completion on the segment extending to New Ashok Nagar in Delhi.
Currently, a 42-kilometre segment of the 82-kilometre corridor is operational in Uttar Pradesh. Puneet Vats, an NCRTC spokesperson, stated that the test runs from Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar are progressing well, with hopes to open the line by New Year. The NCRTC will soon apply for certification from the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), a final step required for operational approval, HT reported.
NCRTC is working to operationalise this section by the New Year, creating a seamless integration with the Delhi Metro, railway stations, and ISBTs, which is expected to enhance connectivity and boost public transport ridership across the NCR.

As part of the final testing phase, NCRTC is conducting evaluations to ensure coordinated performance among various subsystems, including tracks, signalling, platform screen doors (PSDs) and overhead power supply systems. High-speed tests are also planned over the coming months to ensure smooth operations once the corridor is fully open.
RRTS Expansion To Sarai Kale Khan Planned; Full Line By Mid-2025
In addition to the current trials, the entire 82-kilometre corridor is expected to be operational by mid-2025, extending from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut. Once fully completed, the RRTS will reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to just one hour, with trains operating at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour. The entire system, built at an estimated cost of Rs 30,000 crore, is projected to serve up to eight lakh passengers daily.

The planned 60-kilometer semi-high-speed corridor, projected to cost around Rs 15,000 crore, will feature eight intermediate stations and is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and air pollution across the NCR.
