Delhi Metro Phase-IV Update: In a major move, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Thursday announced plans to introduce driverless trains on its Phase-IV corridors. This initiative is aimed at boosting efficiency and reducing reliance on manual control.

“The upcoming Phase-IV will also feature driverless trains. The move marks a significant step in DMRC’s efforts to expand its Unattended Train Operation (UTO) system across the network,” The Indian Express quoted a senior official as saying.

Driverless Train Operations On Pink And Magenta Lines

Driverless trains are currently operational on the Pink Line (Line 7) and Margenta Line (Line 8) of the Delhi Metro under the Unattended Train Operation (UTO) system. According to the DMRC officials, 43 trains on the Pink Line and 26 on the Magenta Line are running under this automated system.

“At present, Unattended Train Operation (UTO) services are operational on the Pink Line (Line–7) and the Magenta Line (Line–8) of the Delhi Metro network. A total of 43 trains are currently deployed on the Pink Line, while 26 trains are operational on the Magenta Line under the UTO system,” the official added.

Delhi Metro To Become Second-Largest Driverless Network

Once Phase IV is completed and driverless operations begin on the extension of the Pink and Magenta Lines, as well as the new Golden Line connecting Aerocity and Tughlakabad, the Delhi Metro will become the second-largest driverless metro network in the world.

The second-largest network will span a total of 160 km of fully automated, driverless operations. According to the DMRC, the driverless operations will enhance the metro’s technical and operational capabilities, representing a significant step in adopting automated technology in India.

Delhi Metro Phase-IV Expansion

The Delhi Metro’s Phase IV project is under construction across six corridors, with three corridors prioritised for early completion. These include Majlis Park to Maujpur (Pink Line Extension), Janakpuri West to R.K. Ashram Marg (Magenta Line Extension), and Delhi Aerocity to Tughlakabad (Golden Line).

The remaining three corridors are proposed routes: Indralok to Indraprastha (Green Line), Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block (Golden Line), and Rithala to Kundli (Red Line Extension).
