The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Wednesday dismissed social media posts claiming a hike in metro fares. The DMRC clarified that fare revisions are determined by a government-appointed panel, and no such proposal has been made.

“This is in reference to some social media posts claiming that Delhi Metro fares have been revised. Delhi Metro's fares can only be revised by an independent Fare Fixation Committee which is nominated by the Government. Presently there is no such proposal for the constitution of any Fare Fixation Committee,” the post read.

Several social media posts claimed that the Delhi Metro fare was increased by 50 per cent after the BJP won the assembly elections. However, a fact-check revealed that this claim was incorrect, as the fare hike actually applied to Bengaluru's Namma Metro.

Notably, fares for Bengaluru Metro were increased by 50 per cent starting February 8. The decision has sparked widespread protests, particularly from the Opposition. Congress workers have staged demonstrations across the city in response.

Under the revised fare structure, the maximum ticket price has been raised from Rs 60 to Rs 90, while the minimum balance required on smart cards has increased from Rs 50 to Rs 90. A report suggests Namma Metro witnessed a 6 per cent dip in ridership since the decision was rolled out.

As per the Deccan Herald, overall footfall stood at 8,28,149 on Monday, which was quite less than average ridership. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had anticipated a 1-2 per cent fall in daily ridership after the revision of ticket prices.
