Delhi News: The Public Works Department (PWD) is set to deploy armed security guards at the Signature Bridge located in North East Delhi to curb rising cases of theft and infrastructure damage. As per the plans of PWD, one armed guard with a gun will be deployed at night, while two guards will be deployed during the day without any guns.

“We have observed several incidents of theft. Thieves have also cut iron grills and damaged infrastructure. If our security guards try to question them, the miscreants usually attack them with knives,” a senior PWD official said, quoted by The Indian Express.

The official further said that most of the thieves are dangerous, and so the PWD has gone ahead with the deployment of one guard with a gun. A tender of Rs 1.5 crore has been floated under the annual maintenance section to deploy guards in an eight-hour shift.

The PWD previously implemented similar security measures at the Pragati Maidan corridor, where armed guards were stationed to deter criminal activity and safeguard public assets following a series of security breaches.

Eligibility Criteria Of Guards

According to PWD requirements, the eligibility criteria for security guards are:

- They should not be above the age of 55 years.

- They should be fluent in Hindi and English.

Delhi’s Signature Bridge

Inaugurated in 2018, Delhi’s Signature Bridge is the country’s first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge, standing as a striking symbol of modern engineering and a crucial artery in the capital’s transport network. Spanning across the Yamuna River, it seamlessly links North and North-East Delhi, providing a direct connection from the Outer Ring Road to densely populated residential and commercial areas such as Wazirabad, Karawal Nagar and Bhajanpura.

The bridge was originally built by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC). The flyover has since been handed over to the Public Works Department for long-term maintenance and operation.
