The dense layer of smog has shrouded the national capital for the second consecutive day, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 432 at 6 am today. The heavy smog has reduced visibility, affecting both flight and train operations. At 5:30 am, Amritsar and Pathankot airports in Punjab reported zero visibility. By 7 am, visibility at Gorakhpur airport in Uttar Pradesh also dropped to zero.
IndiGo has issued an advisory on X, urging passengers to stay vigilant about their flight status, as operations may be disrupted due to poor visibility.

“This morning, winter fog may impact flights to/from Amritsar, Varanasi & Delhi. Do keep a tab on your flight status before heading to the airport. Also, please allow additional travel time as road traffic may move slower than usual due to low visibility. Thank you for your patience, and we wish you a smooth journey,” it wrote.

The national capital has witnessed a sharp spike in pollution in the last 24 hours, with over 30 of 36 monitoring stations reporting severe air quality index.
Temperature drops across North India
The weather in North India suddenly changed on Wednesday, with a noticeable drop in temperature accompanied by fog. The impact of a western disturbance started to be felt in the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir late Tuesday night. The snowfall in the mountains is now affecting the plains.

In the coming days, the cold will intensify, even during the day. States such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh have experienced a rise in cold temperatures, and there are strong indications that the cold will continue to increase over the next several days.
