Delhi Weather: Delhi experienced its first cold wave of the season on Monday, with the minimum temperature dipping below 10 degrees Celsius for the first time this winter. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Aya Nagar weather station recorded a minimum temperature of 9.9 degrees Celsius, 5.6 degrees below normal, marking the onset of chilly conditions in the national capital.
Delhi Weather Forecast: Cold Wave to Continue for Next Two Days, Says IMD
The weather department said cold wave conditions are likely to continue in several parts of Delhi for the next two days. “Cold wave conditions are likely to persist in various areas of Delhi for the next two days,” the IMD stated.
Delhi Weather: Clear Skies but Morning Fog Reduces Visibility
Clear skies and bright sunshine were observed during the day, but the morning remained cold and foggy. The minimum temperature for the city was recorded at 10.4 degrees Celsius, 3.9 degrees below the seasonal average, making it the lowest so far this year. The maximum temperature stood at 27.5 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Humidity levels fluctuated between 93 per cent and 37 per cent throughout the day.
IMD data shows that Aya Nagar was among the coldest locations in Delhi, while Safdarjung and Palam also reported a dip in morning visibility due to fog. At 6 AM, visibility at Palam dropped to 2,100 metres, while Safdarjung recorded 1,500 metres at 5:30 AM.
Meteorologists define a cold wave as a situation when the minimum temperature drops significantly below the normal range — for the plains, this means 10 degrees Celsius or less and 4.5 degrees Celsius to 6.4 degrees Celsius below normal for at least two consecutive days.
Early Winter Chill Grips Capital Ahead of Mid-November
This year’s drop in temperature has arrived earlier than expected. The lowest minimum temperature recorded so far this season was 11 degrees celsius on Saturday. The IMD noted that the minimum temperature had first fallen below 15 degrees celsius on November 6.
Comparing previous years, Delhi had recorded minimum temperatures of 9.5 degrees celsius in 2024, 9.2 degrees celsius in 2023 and 7.3 degrees celsius in 2022 around the same time in November, as per IMD records.
IMD Forecasts Light Fog And Clear Sky On Tuesday
The weather department has forecast light fog on Tuesday morning, followed by clear skies later in the day. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 28 degrees celsius and 11 degrees celsius, respectively.
