At 6:52 pm, the white Hyundai i20 stopped at a red light on Subhas Marg, a busy area in Old Delhi, and exploded within seconds, sending shockwaves across the country. The footage shows commuters caught off guard as chaos erupted in the vicinity.
At least 12 people died near the Lal Quila metro station on Monday evening after a blast in a Hyundai i20 car occurred.
Intelligence agencies have identified Doctor Umar Un Nabi, an Assistant Professor at Al-Falah Medical College in Faridabad, Haryana, as the prime suspect and believed driver of the vehicle.
Initial post-mortem reports revealed victims suffered severe injuries, including broken bones and head trauma. The blast caused extensive internal damage, rupturing lungs, eardrums, and intestines. Sources said fatalities were due to deep wounds and excessive bleeding, with cross-injury patterns indicating victims were thrown against walls or the ground.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) formally handed the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday, citing a possible terror angle. The NIA promptly registered a case and launched a detailed investigation, coordinating with central and state security units to track the perpetrators and any wider network.
Sources added that the agency is also coordinating with other central and state security units as part of its ongoing probe.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the LNJP Hospital on Wednesday and met the survivors of the Red Fort blast. There was heavy security deployment in and around the hospital where the injured are undergoing treatment.
The Delhi Police has intensified security measures across the national capital following the Red Fort blast, with officers making public announcements urging residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious object or activity to the police.
Such announcements were heard near sensitive locations, including the Parliament area, Connaught Place, and railway stations. Police teams equipped with loudspeakers were seen moving through crowded markets and bus terminals, asking people to remain cautious and immediately inform the nearest police post about unattended bags or suspicious movements.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, said the Delhi blast was "a heinous terror incident, perpetrated by anti-national forces" and gave directions for investigation to be pursued with the utmost urgency to bring the perpetrators and their collaborators to justice.
The cabinet expressed its profound grief over the loss of lives in the terrorist incident involving a car explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening.
It observed two minutes' silence in honour of the innocent lives lost.
