Delhi Road Upgrade: An intensive plan to upgrade Delhi roads by March next year has begun, as the Delhi government has initiated a significant program that aims to repair around 500 kilometres of stretches across the capital city.

The announcement of the work was made by the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma during his inspection in Lajpat Nagar and Amar Colony. He evaluated the conditions of the road along with the local Member of Legislative Assembly and PWD officials.

What Kind Of Roads Will Be Repaired In Delhi

Parvesh Verma confirmed that roads that will be repaired include slip roads, footpaths, and foot overbridges along with major carriageways. "By March 2026, the Delhi government will repair 500 kilometres of major road stretches across the national capital. Tenders are being floated for this extensive operation." Verma stated.

Central Govt To Fund Delhi Road Upgrade Work

The Delhi government has secured a huge funding of Rs 800 crore from the central government for the ambitious road repair work, and an additional Rs 803 crore has been allocated under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). CRIF has funded money for broader road infrastructure projects. "We have received substantial funding, which will enable us to enhance our road repair efforts significantly," Verma further added.

Will Delhi Road Repair Work Worsen Air Quality

The fear of construction work worsening the Delhi air quality has surfaced as Delhi is already struggling with 'very poor' to 'severe' AQI across the city. One of the major catalysts for deteriorating AQI in Delhi is Road dust. Verma said that improving road infrastructure is expected to help reduce dust emissions in high-traffic areas.
