Amid the ongoing talks of a merger between Reliance's JioCinema and Disney's Hotstar, a Delhi-based developer has reportedly acquired the domain "JioHotstar", reports ABP Live. The developer has asked Reliance Industries to sponsor their education at Cambridge University in exchange for handing over the domain. 

In a letter addressed to the Reliance executives, the developer explains the reason behind the acquisition. "I thought, 'If they acquire Hotstar, they might rename it to JioHotstar.com," said the anonymous individual. "My intention in purchasing this domain was simple: if the merger happens, I could potentially fulfill my dream of studying at Cambridge."

The developer, who was previously selected into Cambridge University's Accelerate programme in 2021. However, he could not go due to the high cost of the institute. The developer is now seeking Rs 1 crore to cover the tuition fees for an executive MBA at the prestigious institution.

The developer has also described the request as a minor expense for reliance but a life-changing opportunity for him.

Earlier in the day, the head of U.S. giant Disney's Hotstar streaming app in India, Sajith Sivanandan, has resigned, reports news agency Reuters, quoting sources. The resignation comes days after an internal decision for all live sporting events of the merged entity, including the popular Indian Premier League (IPL), to be streamed on Disney's Hotstar app and not Reliance's JioCinema.

After the merger, Disney and Reliance will together have more than 100 TV channels and two streaming apps, and will compete with Sony, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Sivanandan worked at Hotstar for more than two years after working at Google for 15 years.
