The Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (DTIDC) has announced a major revamp of the city's bus queue shelters. Out of nearly 2,000 shelters across the city, 719 are slated for repair and aesthetic upgrades.
As part of the makeover, the shelters will adopt a new orange and green theme, featuring orange floor tiling and green-colored bus numbers for improved visibility and a fresh visual identity.
While the color scheme is changing, some key design elements will remain intact. The existing steel frames, see-through roofs, and designated spaces for outdoor advertisements will be retained, officials confirmed.
“Over time, the infrastructure of a bus stop has evolved from a simple pole and sign to a rudimentary shelter, and more recently to sophisticated structures. These shelters also need repair and upgrade. Providing aesthetically designed and superior quality shelters does not just improve branding but is also seen as a symbol of good governance,” senior official from the Transport Department said, according to the Indian Express report.

List Of Bus Stops To Get Upgraded
Some of the locations set to receive upgraded bus shelters include Malviya Nagar, Green Park, Arjun Nagar, Nehru Place, DDU Marg, Ludlow Castle, Model Town, and Civil Lines, among others.
“The contract of the current company looking after the maintenance of these shelters is expiring. The government has invited bids and is planning to carry out maintenance and repair of these bus stops in a public-private-partnership model… The selected bidder will upgrade the existing bus shelters, platform, and flooring, including, but not limited to, any damaged part of the bus shelter structure or its components,” said officials, according to the Indian Express report.
Currently, bus stops display the route numbers of buses that serve each location—a feature that will remain unchanged in the new design.
The tender floated by DTIDC elaborates on the design, “Dark orange coloured shade prefab cement concrete tiles shall be provided, wherever required, in the flooring over the base of lean cement concrete in the area not less than the area covered by the bus shelter. Front facade (bus shelter name plate), in the centre, the name of the particular bus shelter; on the right, the ideal bus route number available at that stop.”
Advertisement Space At Bus Stops
According to officials, advertisement space at the upgraded bus shelters will be limited in accordance with prevailing norms and will follow the standards set by existing DTC shelters in MCD areas. The total area allocated for advertisements will not exceed 280 square feet per shelter.
Upgraded Bus Stops Facilities
To make the bus stops more weather-resistant, waterproof lighting will be installed, and damaged roofs will be replaced with durable polycarbonate sheets, each at least 8 mm thick.
To minimize inconvenience to commuters, all renovation work will be carried out during nighttime hours. Additionally, the selected concessionaire will be responsible for developing a web portal to provide real-time updates on advertisement installation and removal dates, along with cleaning schedules.
With the Transport Department incurring recurring revenue losses, the BJP-led government is turning to advertising leases as a means to boost income from public infrastructure.
