Tomato prices in Delhi's retail markets surged to Rs 90 per kg on Wednesday, as monsoon rains across many states have disrupted supply chains, vegetable vendors said. Major wholesale vegetable markets, including Azadpur Mandi, Ghazipur Mandi and Okhla Sabzi Mandi, also witnessed significant price hikes.

The price of tomato escalated to Rs 50 per kg in wholesale due to reduced supplies caused by heavy rains, which have hindered transportation from states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Himachal Pradesh.

Locals expressed frustration over the soaring prices. "Just a few days back, we bought tomatoes for Rs 28 per kg, but now it is selling for Rs 90 per kg online and in local markets. Vegetables have become costlier," lamented a resident of Laxmi Nagar.

Sanjay Bhagat, a wholesale vegetable vendor at Azadpur Mandi, highlighted that the number of trucks ferrying tomatoes has decreased significantly over the past week due to heavy rains. This reduction in supply has driven wholesale prices up from Rs 30-35 per kg to Rs 60-70 per kg.

Several states have been experiencing heavy rainfall due to the monsoon, severely impacting tomato crops. In North India, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR and Haryana, prices are expected to rise further.
