The highway, which is the only road leading to the highly significant Hindu shrine of Badrinath, was hit by a landslide on Tuesday as well. The earlier landslide took place just around a kilometre away from Joshimath town. Several hilly areas across Uttarakhand have reported landslides over the past few days as various parts of the state continue witnessing heavy rains.
The Char Dham Yatra remained suspended throughout Sunday after the Indian Meteorological Department's alert for heavy to very heavy rains in various districts of Uttarakhand's Garhwal division. So far since Monday morning, rain-related incidents have claimed three lives across Uttarakhand.
As of Wednesday, flood-like situations prevailed in Uttarakhand's Kumaon division. Several villages in Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar districts remain inundated due to torrential rainfall. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas in Kumaon.
The areas surveyed included Tanakpur, Banbasa, and Khatima. Given the serious conditions in Udham Singh Nagar and Champawat districts due to heavy rains in the Kumaon division, Dhami has spoken to the District Magistrates of both districts to take stock of the situation.
