Delhi Weather Update: Delhi has been placed under a 'red alert' by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as severe heatwave conditions grip the capital, with temperatures breaching the 45 degrees C mark in several parts of the city. The alert, issued on Wednesday, signals a critical warning for residents as extreme heat is expected to continue over the next two days. However, a slight reprieve is anticipated on June 13 night and June 14, with the arrival of western disturbances likely to bring light showers and thunderstorms.
According to the IMD’s daily weather update issued at 2 PM, "Heatwave conditions are likely to prevail at many places across Delhi-NCR," with maximum temperatures expected to range between 44 degrees C and 46 degrees C. On Wednesday, Safdarjung recorded a high of 43.8 degrees C, while Ayanagar reported a scorching 45.5 degrees C, both well above the seasonal average.
Humidity levels were measured at 39per cent in the early hours, but the dry south-westerly winds have intensified the discomfort. The red alert, the highest level in IMD’s warning system, signals a “take action” advisory. It urges people to avoid heat exposure, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities, warning of a very high risk of heat illness and heat stroke, especially for vulnerable populations.

Heatwave Likely Across Northwest India
IMD senior scientist Dr Naresh Kumar told PTI, "Northwest India is currently experiencing severe heat. Over the next 3-4 days, heatwave conditions are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, northern Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan will remain under red alert for the next three days.
"Delhi-NCR is under red alert today and tomorrow, followed by an orange alert on June 13. Light rain and thunderstorms are possible on the night of June 13 due to a western disturbance, which may bring some relief," he added.
The IMD noted that an orange alert will replace the red alert from June 13, signalling relatively milder, though still concerning, conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, especially in urban areas where the risk of heat-related health issues is high.
Dusty Winds, Poor AQI In Delhi-NCR
Besides the unbearable heat, Delhi’s air quality also deteriorated, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting 225 at 2 PM, placing it in the 'poor' category. The weather bureau has forecast partly cloudy skies on June 12 and 13, accompanied by dust-raising winds that may gust up to 60 kmph during thunderstorms.
Officials have urged citizensNparticularly children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing medical conditions to remain indoors during peak heat hours and take all recommended precautions. The IMD expects a slight dip in temperatures and light to moderate rain starting June 14, which may bring some relief.
Until then, Delhi remains on high alert as extreme temperatures continue to challenge public health and safety.
