Delhi Water Crisis: The water from Himachal Pradesh has not yet reached Delhi, leading to the water level in the Yamuna River at Wazirabad remaining five feet below normal. Despite the Water Board receiving more water than its allocation from all sources combined, as per the Summer Bulletin released on June 8, the Jal Board was forced to supply 34 MGD (million gallons per day) more than its capacity from its nine water purification plants on Sunday morning.

This situation has been exacerbated by the reduced water supply from the Wazirabad water purification plant due to the low water level in the Yamuna. Additionally, Delhi's Water Minister Atishi has written a letter to the Haryana Chief Minister Naib Saini, accusing the state government of releasing about 100 MGD less water than Delhi's share in the Munak Canal.

Atishi has demanded that the Haryana government immediately release Delhi's share of water in the Munak Canal, warning that a severe drinking water shortage could grip the national capital within a day or two if this issue is not resolved. The matter has now reached the Lieutenant Governor's office, with Atishi requesting an emergency meeting to address the crisis.

According to the Lieutenant Governor's office, VK Saxena is closely monitoring the situation and has directed officials to submit a report on the actual status of water released by Himachal and Haryana, measures taken to prevent water wastage and leakage in Delhi, and the status of desilting the Wazirabad reservoir.

In her letter, Atishi has reminded the Haryana government of the 2018 agreement between Delhi and Haryana in the Upper Yamuna River Board, which stipulates that Delhi should receive 1050 cusecs (565 MGD) of water per day from the Munak Canal. However, in the last week, the water supply from the Munak Canal has decreased drastically, with Delhi receiving only 840 cusecs (452 MGD) of water, a significant shortfall.

Despite the Water Board's efforts, the supply of 990.91 MGD of water on Sunday was still not enough to meet the city's needs, with the Yamuna water level at Wazirabad standing at 669.50 feet, well below the normal level of 674.50 feet.
