Delhi is set to witness a major infrastructure boost with the construction of a 14-km elevated corridor connecting INA and Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj. This project aims to ease congestion on the Ring Road, particularly benefiting commuters in South Delhi.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will oversee the corridor’s construction, with funding from both the Delhi government and the Ministry of Urban Affairs. Additionally, NHAI plans to build a tunnel between Nelson Mandela Marg and the Shiv Murti Interchange, providing seamless access to Indira Gandhi Airport for commuters from East and South Delhi.

Project Details & Cost Estimation

Initially approved in July 2021, the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) was to manage the project. However, delays due to pending approval from the Public Investment Board put it on hold.

As per a Times of India report, discussions at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to address Delhi’s traffic congestion prompted the Road Transport and Highways Ministry to entrust the project to NHAI. Following this, Union Road Transport Secretary V Umashankar held a meeting with officials from NHAI, the Delhi government, and the National Buildings Construction Corporation.

The project's original cost estimate was Rs 4,500 crore, but the final budget will be determined after the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is completed.

Relief from Traffic Woes

The elevated corridor is expected to significantly reduce congestion on the Ring Road, particularly near AIIMS crossing and Bhikaji Cama flyover, where daily traffic volume reaches 1.3 lakh and 3.3 lakh vehicles, respectively.

Once completed, this key infrastructure upgrade will enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and improve overall traffic flow in the capital city.
