As a thick blanket of smog envelops large parts of North India, dense fog has become a major hazard, drastically reducing visibility and making driving on roads and highways extremely challenging. Winter conditions continue to disrupt daily life across many regions, often leading to road accidents and delays in flights and train services. In such conditions, extra caution is essential. Below are some practical tips to help ensure your safety and that of others while driving in fog.
Use Your Hearing Along With Your Vision
When fog limits visibility, your ears can help compensate. Lower or switch off music and roll down the windows slightly so you can hear approaching vehicles, horns, or engine sounds. This is particularly useful on hilly or winding roads.
Don’t Depend Only on GPS
Driving in unfamiliar areas during fog can be risky. While navigation apps can guide you to your destination, they won’t warn you about potholes, sharp bends, or stalled vehicles ahead. Use GPS as a support, but rely equally on your observation skills and pay close attention to road signs.
Follow Road Markings
Fog can blur the road ahead, making lane discipline difficult. In such situations, use the white line on the left side of the road as a reference to stay in your lane. Avoid focusing on the center line, as glare from oncoming vehicles can reduce visibility further. Slow down while negotiating curves and turns.
Prevent Window Fogging
Car windows often mist up in foggy conditions, further limiting visibility. Use the defogger and air conditioning effectively to keep the windshield clear. Ensure the wiper fluid is topped up and keep a microfiber cloth handy for quick cleaning if needed.
Avoid Frequent Lane Changes
Changing lanes repeatedly in foggy conditions can confuse other drivers and increase accident risk. Stick to your lane and maintain a steady speed. If a lane change is unavoidable, signal well in advance and proceed only when it is safe.
Key Safety Reminders
1. Drive at a reduced speed and factor in extra travel time.
2. Keep your headlights on low beam so your vehicle remains visible to others. Use fog lights if available.
3. Avoid using high beam lights, as they reflect off the fog and worsen visibility.
Staying alert and following these precautions can significantly reduce risks when driving in foggy conditions.
