After a 16-year hiatus, India is preparing to launch its national census in a modern, digital avatar. This upcoming census will be distinct from previous ones, utilising mobile applications and online portals for the entire data collection process. The exercise is scheduled to be conducted in two distinct phases.

Revenue and Finance ADM Kumar Dharmendra said, "Preparations for the census are currently in progress. We encourage everyone to share their information transparently. To build public trust, we ensure that this data will not be used for court evidence, government benefits, or shared under RTI. Only collective data will be released to the public."

Two-Phase Implementation

First Phase (House Listing): This stage will focus on the enumeration of households. It will also gather data on housing materials and household assets to assess the economic status of the population.

Second Phase (Caste Census): The second stage will involve a caste-based enumeration.

With the shift to digital tools, the data collection process is expected to be significantly faster, with official figures projected to be released by 2027. In the local district alone, preparations are underway to deploy over 50,000 personnel for this task.

Data Privacy And Security Measures

A primary focus of this census is the absolute confidentiality of information. To encourage citizens to provide accurate data, the administration has implemented strict privacy safeguards:

Restricted Usage: The collected data cannot be used to determine eligibility for government schemes.

Legal Protection: The information will not be admissible as evidence in a court of law.

RTI Immunity: Personal details are exempt from disclosure under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Aggregate Data Only: Only generalised, aggregate statistics will be made public, ensuring that individual identities remain protected.
