Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed that Indian Railways (IR) is providing free Wi-Fi facilities at 6,115 railway stations across the country. In a written statement presented in the Rajya Sabha on August 8, Vaishnaw stated that the initiative is part of the Government of India’s (GoI) broader Digital India program, aimed at enhancing digital connectivity and accessibility for the public.
“Almost all railway stations across Indian Railways have 4G/5G coverage provided by the Telecom Service Providers. These networks are also being utilised by passengers for data connectivity resulting in enhanced passenger experience. Besides the above, free Wi-Fi services have also been provided at 6115 Railway stations,” Vaishnaw said.
The Union Minister was responding to questions raised by Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal regarding the total number of railway stations offering free Wi-Fi services.
List Of Indian Railway Stations With Free Wi-Fi Service
Some of the prominent railway stations in India where free Wi-Fi is available include: Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar Terminal, New Delhi, Delhi Junction, Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, Ambala Cantt. Jn., Karnal, Panipat, Rohtak, Gurgaon, Solan, Shimla, Jammu Tawi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Ranchi, Dhanbad Junction, Mangalore Central, Yesvantpur, Bangarpet, Dharwad, Ernakulam Jn., Kozhikode, Tiruvananthapuram Central, Bhopal, Ujjain, Indore, Mumbai Central, Pune, Kalyan, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Cuttack, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Amritsar, Jalandhar City, Ludhiana, Chennai Central, Kacheguda, Hyderabad, Secunderabad Jn., Allahabad, Gorakhpur Jn., Moradabad, Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut City, Sealdah, Kharagpur, Barddhaman, Asansol, New Jalpaiguri, and Howrah, among others.
How To Connect Free Wi-Fi At Indian Railway Stations
Passengers at railway stations can take advantage of free Wi-Fi services to stream high-definition (HD) videos, download movies, songs, and games, or even complete office work online, all within the station premises.
Steps to connect to the Wi-Fi at a railway station:
Turn on the Wi-Fi mode on your smartphone.
Select the "RailWire" Wi-Fi network from the available options.
Enter your mobile number to receive a one-time password (OTP) via SMS.
Enter the OTP to authenticate and start accessing high-speed internet.
These Wi-Fi services are being provided by RailTel, a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways.
