Diwali 2024: The tourism department of Uttar Pradesh government along with the district administration of Ayodhya set a new world record on Wednesday by lighting more than 25 lakh diyas during the eighth annual Deepotsav celebration in Ayodhya.

In doing so, the tourism department and the Ayodhya administration broke their own joint record from last year. In 2023, the state government had illuminated Ayodhya with a little over 22.23 lakh diyas. The feat had earned the state government a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

However, the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led UP government surpassed its own achievement this time. Though the new world record was created with the lighting of around 25 lakh diyas, it was earlier reported that the state government was aiming to illuminate Ayodhya with over 28 lakh such oil lamps.

- The UP government originally aimed to break its own world record by lighting over 28 lakh oil lamps along the banks of river Saryu in Ayodhya. This is the first Deepotsav in Ayodhya since the inauguration of the grand Ram Mandir in the holy city.

- A 30-member Guinness World Records team was reportedly present in Ayodhya to adjudicate over the attempt.

The diyas were reportedly arranged by 30,000 volunteers.
