DK Shivakumar Elected As Congress Legislative Party Leader, To Take Oath As Karnataka CM On June 3

Karnataka: DK Shivakumar was elected as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) during a high-stakes meeting at the Vidhan Soudha on Saturday. He is scheduled to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka on June 3.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was attended by CLP Secretary Allamprabhu Patil, AICC General Secretary in charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, and Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal.

DK Shivakumar Elected As CLP Leader

Outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who announced his resignation on Thursday, proposed the name of DK Shivakumar as the new CLP leader, which was backed by Home Minister G Parameshwara.

Venugopal announced that DK Shivakumar has been elected as the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party.

The official letter confirming Shivakumar's election as CLP leader will be sent to Lok Bhavan. He will then meet the Governor to stake his claim to form the new government.

Earlier, Congress state working president G C Chandrashekhar said that Shivakumar will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka on June 3 at the Glass House of Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru.

"We are going to see DK Shivakumar become the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. This is a day that all of us have been waiting for, and I am sure it is the fulfilment of a long-cherished dream for him," Congress leader Nayana Motamma said.

With the leadership question settled in Karnataka, the focus of the Congress high command has now shifted toward selecting the deputy chief minister to serve under Shivakumar.

Siddaramaiah's Resignation

Siddaramaiah on Thursday submitted his regstion resignation to the Governor's office, stating that he was acting in accordance with the party leadership's decision. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot subsequently accepted the resignation and dissolved the Council of Ministers with immediate effect, concluding months of speculation over a leadership transition in Karnataka.

Who Is DK Shivakumar?

Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar, popularly known as DKS, was born on May 15, 1962, in Kanakapura, near Bengaluru, to Kempegowda and Gouramma. His younger brother, DK Suresh, is also a politician and a former Member of Parliament.

Shivakumar's political journey began in the early 1980s as a student leader. His breakthrough came in 1989 when, at the age of 27, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Sathanur constituency on a Congress ticket. He retained this seat in the 1994, 1999, and 2004 elections.

Following the constituency delimitation, he was shifted to Kanakapura, where he continued his winning streak in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023.

Shivakumar has been recognised as a 'troubleshooter' for the Congress party.
