DMK MP A Raja on Sunday evening had a miraculous escape after a light pole crashed on the stage due to strong winds in Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai. Raja was addressing a public gathering when the incident took place.

The visuals of the incident have surfaced showing Raja running from the site after sensing the light poll falling.

The fixture fell onto the microphone stand where Raja was speaking. As Raja escaped, the steel pole crashed onto the podium, triggering panic among those present.

After the pole collapsed, leaders on the stage and people off the stage ran for cover. Raja and other party leaders present at the event left the venue immediately after the incident.

Reports say that Raja spoke for about 15 minutes before the unfortunate incident happened. Shortly after the incident was triggered by strong winds, heavy rainfall followed. As per the TOI report, the inclement weather tore down posters and sent chairs flying.

Weather in Tamil Nadu

On Sunday, several areas of the state, especially central region like Trichy experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The weather across India took a sudden turn in recent days as residents got a respite from scorching heat. In Tamil Nadu, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that rains will lash several districts for upcoming six days. The rainfall is expected in various districts like Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Salem and Madurai.

As per the weather department, light to moderate rainfall in very likely at isolated places with thunderstorm and lightning and gusty winds reaching a speed of 30-40 kmph at one or two places is likely to occur over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal area today. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Ghat areas of Coimbatore; Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul districts.
