Congress MP Shashi Tharoor often makes headlines with his political statements, contradicting his party's stand on various issues. This time, he has done this by praising former deputy PM and veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani and comparing his political legacy with that of former PMs Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
It all started with a birthday wish for Advani. Tharoor posted a picture of himself with Advani on X and wished him on his 98th birthday. Tharoor said, "Wishing the venerable Shri LK Advani a very happy 98th birthday! His unwavering commitment to public service, his modesty & decency, and his role in shaping the trajectory of modern India are indelible. A true statesman whose life of service has been exemplary."
Lauding Advani's 'unwavering commitment to public service' and calling him a 'true statesman' didn't go well with many users.
Sanjay Hegde, a Supreme Court lawyer, quoted Tharoor's post and wrote, "Sorry Mr Tharoor, unleashing the ‘dragon seeds of hatred’ (to quote Khushwant Singh) in this country is NOT public service."

Tharoor responded to the post saying that one episode must not be used to judge a person's legacy the same way Nehru and Indira's legacies can not be judged by only the China setback and the Emergency, respectively.

He urged to extend the same courtesy to Advani. Tharoor wrote, "Agreed, but reducing his long years of service to one episode, however significant, is also unfair. The totality of Nehruji’s career cannot be judged by the China setback, nor Indira Gandhi’s by the Emergency alone. I believe we should extend the same courtesy to Advaniji."
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Advani to extend the birthday greetings. The PM shared the glimpses of his meeting with Advani on X, and said, "Advani Ji’s life has been dedicated to strengthening India’s progress. He has always embodied the spirit of selfless duty and steadfast principles. His contributions have left an indelible mark on India's democratic and cultural landscape. May he be blessed with good health and a long life."
