Jagran Correspondent, East Delhi | The investigation in the DU Assistant Professor Debosmita Paul murder case revealed that the main accused, Ramprasad Das, is a fraud who duped several people in West Bengal's Bardhaman. The probe revealed that he has defrauded people of approximately Rs 2 crore by using various fraudulent means.

Role of AI-Empowered CCTV

CCTV cameras equipped with AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools played a key role in identifying the accused, who travelled 1,400 kilometres to Delhi with his family to murder the DU Assistant Professor. The accused wore a mask to hide their identity. It was a big challenge for the police to establish their identity scientifically. When the professor's family was consulted and shown CCTV footage, they could not identify them. The AI CCTV cameras exposed the accused. According to the police, the accused tried to escape by wearing masks and changing their clothes after the murder, but could not escape the AI cameras. The accused had also conducted a recce of the assistant professor's house twice before the murder.

The accused were seen wearing masks in footage from the society gate on June 3. DCP Rajiv Kumar said a team consisting of Inspector Rajesh, SI Ajay, and Special Staff Officers Jitendra Malik and Kaushal were assigned to analyse the footage.

With the help of cameras equipped with AI tools, the accused were identified and their entire route was mapped. They were wearing masks until New Delhi Railway Station. Their faces were visible in some cameras. Images of their eyes, hands, and hair were uploaded to the AI tool, which generated a realistic facial sketch. Subsequently, the professor's family identified them, and the police apprehended them after tracing their mobile location.

Incriminating Items Recovered From The Accused's Home

The police found several incriminating items from the accused's house that show Ramprasad Das was a repeated ofender and used to dupe others. Several fake ID cards and badges belonging to the West Bengal Police were found. A fake ticket checker badge was also recovered.

The police also recovered bundles of notes made by placing real notes on top and bottom and plain paper in the middle, which are used in defrauding people. Over 100 shirts and 25 luxury watches were also recovered. The source said the accused could not provide satisfactory answers about the seized items.

Photographs Of Victim's House And Car Recovered

The photos of the number plate of the victim's car and her house taken during the recce were recovered from the accused's mobile phone.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police produced accused Ramprasad Das and his wife Banashree in the Bardhaman court in Bengal and obtained their transit remand. The accused will be brought to Delhi by Tuesday.

Scammed 50 People

According to police, Ramprasad, a 10th-grade pass, used to borrow large sums of money from people in Bardhaman, Bengal, and then embezzle them. He has defrauded approximately 50 people of Rs 2 crore.

What Was The Main Dispute?

According to police, the accused wanted to buy the assistant professor's 1,300-yard house worth Rs 3 crore and offered a proposal, but Paul denied. Suspecting that Das may have illegally possessed her rented accommodation, she warned him that if he did not vacate the house within a week, she would complain to the police. Consequently, he planned the murder and, along with his wife, carried out the crime.

In 2023, he rented two rooms in this house for Rs 5,000 per month. A year and a half later, he rented the entire house for Rs 11,000 per month. He visited Karol Bagh once every two months to purchase goods for his sanitary ware shop.

According to the police, after murdering the professor, the accused couple got off the general coach of the train at Bardhaman station and walked one kilometre. They picked up a scooter parked in a deserted area and went home. The accused couple has been taken on transit remand, and their son has been sent to the juvenile home in Bardhaman.
