Jagran Correspondent | East Delhi: The East Delhi District has arrested three people, including a woman, in connection with the killing of a Delhi University professor, Dr Debosmita Paul, last week. The three were apprehended on Wednesday as they were captured in the CCTV footage. The accused said that they killed Paul regarding a property dispute.
What Did The Investigation Reveal?
The East Delhi police revealed the murder is linked to a property dispute. Paul was the heir to her maternal grandfather's land in West Bengal. Her elder brother and sister wanted to sell the land; however, the DU professor was unwilling to do so.
Meanwhile, a tenant couple residing on the same property wanted to purchase the land. When the professor refused, the couple traveled from Bengal to Delhi with their child.
They went to the professor's home, where a dispute escalated, and the accused killed her by hitting him on the head with a heavy object. Sources say his child was outside the house at the time of the killing.
What Did Ex-Husband Say?
She had separated from her husband in 2022, five years after their marriage, following a domestic dispute. Her husband lives in Bengaluru.
Earlier, the Delhi Police interrogated the husband on the murder case.
“He said that he was earlier in Bengaluru and moved to Pune for work in 2024,” HT quoted an officer as saying.
According to investigators, the man said he was in Pune at the time of the incident. “He said that his lawyer had communicated to the victim’s lawyer in May and decided to divorce mutually,” the officer cited above said.
The victim, Dr Debosmita Paul, was a professor at Delhi University's Shivaji College. Paul lived alone at her sister's flat in Satyam Apartments in Satyam Enclave, East Delhi. She was hit with a heavy object.
A severe wound was found on her head, and veins in her wrist were found severed.
