Kolkata Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata and several other districts in West Bengal, effective until October 5, as the region braces for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds during the festive season of Durga Puja and Dussehra. A cyclonic circulation forming over the north Andaman Sea on September 30 is expected to intensify into a low-pressure system by October 1, bringing widespread rainfall across West Bengal.
Heavy rain is forecast for September 30 in districts like Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and parts of Kolkata. The city is likely to experience light to moderate showers in the first few days of October, with conditions worsening from October 2. On Dashami, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 40–50 kmph.
The wet weather may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas of Kolkata, traffic disruptions on major roads, and risks to Durga Puja pandals exposed to strong winds. The IMD has advised commuters to be cautious of reduced visibility during heavy showers and urged pandal organizers to secure structures against gusty winds and intense rainfall.
The yellow alert extends to all 23 districts of West Bengal from October 2 to 5, including Alipurduar, Bankura, Birbhum, Cooch Behar, Dakshin Dinajpur, Darjeeling, Hooghly, Howrah, Jalpaiguri, Jhargram, Kalimpong, Kolkata, Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Paschim Bardhaman, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, Purba Medinipur, Purulia, South 24 Parganas, and Uttar Dinajpur. Some areas are also under an orange alert due to the likelihood of more severe weather.
Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue on October 3, with conditions gradually easing by October 5. While the showers may dampen festive celebrations, authorities recommend taking early precautions such as reinforcing pandals and avoiding waterlogged areas to minimize disruptions during one of Kolkata’s most vibrant weeks.
