Manipur Violence: After photos of the bodies of two Meitei students who had gone missing on July 6, near Bishnupur, circulated on social media, it has brought the Manipur unrest under the spotlight once again. In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the state, the state government on Tuesday shut down all schools till Friday. The mobile internet services in the state were also suspended for five days, officials said.
Amid ongoing unrest in Manipur, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the state and federal administrations are working to find a solution so that there is sufficient law-and-order enforcement and a sense of normalcy returns.

"...I think one part of the problem in Manipur has been the destabilising impact of migrants who have come," he said on Tuesday. "But there are also tensions which obviously have a long history which precede that. And today, I think the effort is on the part of the state government and the Union government to find a way by which a sense of normalcy returns, that arms which were seized during that period are recovered, that there is an adequate law-and-order enforcement out there so that incidents of violence don't happen," the minister said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Earlier this month, a group of United Nations experts said they are "appalled" by reports and images of violence in Manipur targeting women and girls, and urged the Indian government to take robust action to investigate the incidents and hold the perpetrators to account.
The experts also raised alarm over the major human rights abuses in Manipur, such as instances of alleged sexual violence, extrajudicial killings, home demolition, forced eviction, torture, and ill-treatment. However, India dismissed these remarks as "unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading" and claimed that the situation in Manipur is peaceful.
