Amid the Bihar SIR row and voter-theft allegations, the Election Commission of India on Saturday warned the political parties raising issues about errors in Electoral Rolls, saying that they should have raised the issues during the Claims and Objections period of elections. The poll body further stated that ECI shares electoral rolls with parties before any election to correct mistakes, if genuine, before these polls.

In an official press release, the ECI stated, “Recently, some Political Parties and individuals are raising issues about errors in the Electoral Rolls, including those prepared in the past. The appropriate time to raise any issue with the Electoral Rolls would have been during the Claims and Objections period of that phase, which is precisely the objective behind sharing the Electoral Rolls with all Political Parties and the Candidates.”

Emphasising the appropriate time to raise the issue, the poll body said, “Had these issues been raised at the right time through the right channels, it would have enabled the concerned SDM EROs to correct the mistakes, if genuine, before those elections"

The ECI further stated that the poll body continues to welcome scrutiny of the Electoral Rolls from Political Parties. “It will help SDMS/EROS to remove the errors and purify the Electoral Rolls, which has always been the objective of ECI," it said.

On the other hand, the Election Commission will hold a press conference on Sunday. This comes after the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, accused the ECI of working with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) using the data from the Mahadevapura assembly seat in Bengaluru Central (in Congress-ruled Karnataka). Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Leader Tejashwi Yadav also accused the ECI of Bihar SIR.
