PIB Fact Check, the government’s official fact-check wing, has debunked a digitally altered video of President Droupadi Murmu, which has been circulating on social media. According to the government officials, the videos where President Murmu was allegedly making ‘false’ claims about “extremism, shrinking freedoms, weakening secularism and threats” to minorities in India had been circulated by fictitious social media handlers in an attempt to tarnish the image of the Indian President.

The Press Information Bureau’s fact-check unit issued a strong warning clarifying that the President had made no such claims, and warned the people to be aware before falling for such misleading and harmful content. “The President of India has made NO such statement. This AI-generated fake video is being circulated to mislead people,” the PIB Fact Check Unit’s post on the official X (formerly Twitter) account read.

The altered clip, which caused the furore on social media, was shared on X by an account named Baba Thoka. To curb the spread of misinformation, authorities have blocked the account. According to officials, the video was digitally altered using AI tools and digitally manipulated to insert statements that were never made by the Indian President.

In the concluding part of the post, the government shared a link that contained the original speech of President Murmu.

What Did The Original Speech Contain?

The original speech, which is available on the official YouTube channel of the Indian President, was delivered on the occasion of the 76th Constitution Day on November 26. In the actual speech, the President praised the Constitution, terming it the backbone of India’s strong democratic system.
