Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday rebuked Bangladesh for its reference to the "Chicken Neck Corridor", asserting that Dhaka has two such narrow strips, which are far more vulnerable. This came after Bangladesh interim government chief Muhammad Yunus recently commented on India’s Chicken Neck Corridor, which connects West Bengal’s Siliguri with seven states of the northeast, including Assam.
Sarma shared the map of Bangladesh while specifically marking the narrow strips.

“To those who habitually threaten India on the “Chicken Neck Corridor”, should note these facts as well. Bangladesh has two of its own “chicken necks”. Both are far more vulnerable. First is the 80 Km North Bangladesh Corridor- from Dakhin Dinajpur to South West Garo Hills. Any disruption here, can completely isolate the entire Rangpur division from rest of Bangladesh. Second is the 28 km Chittagong Corridor, from South Tripura till the Bay of Bengal. This corridor, smaller than India’s chicken neck, is the only link between Bangladesh’s economic capital and political capital,” Sarma posted on X.

“I am only presenting geographical facts that some may tend to forget. Just like India’s Siliguri Corridor, our neighbouring country is also embedded with two narrow corridors of theirs,” he added.
The northeastern states– Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim– are connected with the rest of India through a 22-km strip of land called the “chicken neck” corridor. Sarma has at times emphasised the need to acknowledge the vulnerability of the region. He also raised the issue in the NITI Aayog meeting. He said the northeastern states should be provided with better connectivity through railways, roadways and waterways. He also said industrial corridors should be developed in the area, The Indian Express reported citing his office.
