The protesting farmers, who remained steadfast in their demonstration at Punjab-Haryana's Shambhu border will now march towards Delhi on December 14, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher announced on Tuesday.
"We have called for a march to Delhi on December 14. On that day, a group of 101 farmers will head to Delhi. On December 11, we urged people to gather at the Shambhu border to celebrate the victory of both fronts and to pray for the recovery of Jagjit Singh Dallewal. December 13 marks ten months of our movement, and on December 14, we will march to Delhi," Pandher told reporters at Shambhu border.
Notably, the farmers have previously attempted to march to Delhi twice from the Shambhu border, but the administration prevented them from entering Haryana. The administration believes that the protesters do not have permission to enter Delhi.
Earlier, farmers had attempted to march to Delhi on December 6 and 8 as part of the ongoing agitation led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. On December 6, a group of 101 farmers first tried to cross into Delhi but was stopped by security forces. Undeterred, they made another attempt on December 8, which led to clashes between protesters and security personnel, leaving several farmers injured.
At the Khanauri border, the hunger strike by Bharatiya Kisan Union (Sidhu) state chief Jagjit Singh Dallewal entered its 15th day. The 70-year-old leader’s health has significantly deteriorated, with a weight loss of 11 kilograms during the protest. According to Dr Shaurya Kaushal, Dallewal urgently requires medication and glucose, but he has refused to accept any treatment.
In light of his condition, farmers have heightened security around him. CCTV cameras have been installed near his trolley, and LCD screens are being used for round-the-clock monitoring. Farmer organizations fear that the police might forcibly remove Dallewal, citing health concerns, as they allegedly attempted during a previous incident.
In a show of solidarity, people across the country have been urged to skip their evening meal on December 12 to support Dallewal’s protest. Meanwhile, the farmers’ movement continues to intensify with each passing day.
