Planning to fly soon? Make sure you’re up to date with the latest hand baggage rules introduced by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). Under the new regulations, passengers are allowed to carry just one piece of cabin baggage on board, and it cannot exceed 7kg. Any extra luggage must be checked in.
Why the New Rules?
The updated guidelines aim to ease congestion at pre-boarding security checkpoints. With a surge in passenger numbers, BCAS, in collaboration with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), has tightened hand baggage regulations. Airlines are now strictly enforcing these rules to ensure smoother operations.
Key Highlights of the Hand Baggage Policy
1. One Bag Limit: Passengers, whether on domestic or international flights, can carry only one cabin bag. Any additional baggage must go in the cargo hold.
2. Weight and Size Restrictions: Economy and premium economy passengers are allowed one hand bag weighing up to 7kg, while first-class or business-class travellers can carry up to 10kg. The bag’s dimensions should not exceed:
- Height: 55 cm (21.6 inches)
- Length: 40 cm (15.7 inches)
- Width: 20 cm (7.8 inches)
3. Special Exemption for Older Bookings: If you booked your flight before 2 May 2024, you can carry slightly heavier hand baggage:
- Economy class: Up to 8kg
- Premium economy: Up to 10kg
- First or business class: Up to 12kg
However, this exemption applies only to tickets booked before this date. Any changes to the booking after 2 May 2024 will fall under the new baggage policy.
These Airlines Have Specific Rules
Air India: Economy passengers can carry one bag up to 7kg, while business-class travellers are permitted up to 10kg. The total dimension of the bag must not exceed 115 cm.
IndiGo Airlines: IndiGo also allows one cabin bag with a maximum weight of 7kg and dimensions of up to 115 cm. In addition, passengers can carry a personal item, such as a small laptop bag or purse, weighing no more than 3kg.
To avoid last-minute surprises or additional fees, check your airline's baggage policies before heading to the airport. Remember, sticking to the one-bag rule and staying within weight and size limits will ensure a smoother travel experience.
