G20 Summit 2023: All eyes are on the upcoming mega event, as India is all set to host the 18th meeting of the G20 Group from September 9 to 10. The two-day summit will be held at the newly built international convention and exhibition centre -- Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
The G20, or Group of 20, is an intergovernmental organisation that brings the largest industrialised and developing economies of the globe together. India currently holds the rotating presidency of the multinational group. G20 Summit Presidency was handed over to India on December 1, 2022.
India, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, US, and the European Union (EU) are all members of the G20.
What's The Importance Of The Summit
According to India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, the G20 is an economic body and India will focus on developmental issues. The stage has been set for the summit by multiple rounds of meetings of officials, finance ministers and central bank governors.
What To Expect From G20 Summit 2023
Climate change, economic growth, debt loads in low-income nations, and inflation sparked by Russia's war in Ukraine are all on the agenda in New Delhi. G20 group leaders will produce a formal joint declaration at the end if they reach a consensus on any or all of these subjects.
Delhi G20 Summit: Xi, Putin Skipping Meeting, What Does Their Absence Mean
Since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin in March for alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine, Putin will not be present at the summit in India. Beijing also declared that Chinese President Xi Jinping is also skipping the summit. In his absence, Premier Li Qiang will lead the country’s delegation.
Their absence indicates that there won't be much on the agenda that focuses on the conflict in Ukraine explicitly. There are no expectations for any type of legally binding communiqué among the leaders. Such a document would require the signatures of Putin and Xi.
G20 Summit: What Does The US Want To Get Out Of It
US President Biden on Thursday (local time) departed for India where he would attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Two leaders are expected to make meaningful advancements on the GE jet engine deal and civil nuclear technology during their bilateral talks.
