Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday suspended four engineers a day after the collapse of a section of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge in Vadodara district. The chief minister suspended engineers of the Roads and Building (R&B) department after a thorough investigation into the tragedy that killed at least 17 people. Apart from this, Patel has also directed the officials to conduct a thorough inspection of the other bridges in the state. The chief minister on Wednesday assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits.

While providing details, the advisory stated that the suspended engineers include R&B Vadodara Division Executive Engineer NM Nayakawala, Deputy Executive Engineers UC Patel and RT Patel, and Assistant Engineer JV Shah. It further stated that more details are likely to emerge after an in-depth investigation into the matter.

Earlier in the early hours of Thursday, a high-level committee visited the site of the collapse to gather information. The state government also informed that eight injured people are receiving treatment, adding that the search operation for three missing persons is ongoing.

“The Chief Minister had formed a team of experts to inspect in detail the entire duration of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge, including the repairs carried out, inspections, quality check and other such parameters during the lifetime of the bridge. The team had prepared a report and handed it over to the Chief Minister…” the statement from the state government stated.

“As per the causes of the collapse mentioned in the primary probe, the Chief Minister has decided to immediately suspend the officers responsible for the tragedy,” it added. Apart from this, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi demanded a thorough investigation into the matter, adding that innocent people have lost their lives due to the negligence of the administration.
