Ganga Floods: The heavy rains in the Gangetic plains have brought floods in several districts in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The flood situation has risen due to the rise of water levels in the Rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and their tributaries.
From Prayagraj in UP to the Bay of Bengal, normal life has been largely affected. This flood has affected both India and Bangladesh. In India, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Ballia districts of Uttar Pradesh, and Buxar, Bhojpur, Saran, Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, and Bhagalpur districts of Bihar are affected by the flood.
The teams of NDRF and SDRF have been making efforts to rescue people to safety and the relief camps have been set up.
City-wise situation
The situation is even more serious in the upstream areas of the Ganga. In Ghazipur, the water level of the Ganga is 1 meter above the danger mark and is rising at a speed of 1 centimeter per hour. In Varanasi, the water level is above the danger mark and is rising at a speed of 3 centimeters per hour.
Ganga is also flowing above the danger mark in Mirzapur, where the water level is rising by 2 centimetres per hour. According to the data at 10:00 am at the Allahabad Water Level Measuring Centre, located at the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna in Prayagraj, the water level is rising at the rate of 3 centimetres per hour. The water level is also above the danger mark at two other centres in Prayagraj, Phaphamau and Prayagraj.
Will UP, Bihar see relief in coming days?
The districts situated in the lower reaches of the River Ganga are likely to see worsened conditions in the coming days. In Bihar, the river has breached the banks and is spreading into the plains, which may reduce the pace of the rising water level, but not lower it.
Experts believe that there is little chance of relief from floods in the lower areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in the next few days. Although a little relief is expected with low water level pressure from the River Yamuna's tributaries, like the Ken and the Betwa.
The water level in these tributaries is gradually decreasing and would further reduce if there is no heavy rainfall in Madhya Pradesh in the coming days. If it does not rain, the UP and Bihar districts facing flood-like situations will see major relief in 2-3 days.
However, if the catchment areas of the Ken and Betwa receive heavy rainfall within 24-48 hours, the situation will worsen.
