Garba Heart Attacks: Responding to unusually high heart attack cases during the Garba festival, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has suggested that the people who have experienced a serious case of COVID-19 and haven't had sufficient time since then are advised to steer clear of over overexertion to minimise the risk of heart attack.
"On heart attack cases during the Garba festival, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya says, "ICMR has done a detailed study recently. The study says that those who have had severe COVID and enough amount of time has not passed, should avoid overexertion, and overwork out, running or over-exercising for at least a year or two, to avoid heart attacks," Minister said while talking to ANI on Monday.
Highlighting the recommendation of the study he suggested that overworkout, running, over-exercising and excessive physical strain should be avoided by such individuals. The Minister's comment came after more than 12 people died of cardiovascular failure while performing the 'Garba' dance during the recent Navratri festivities in the state of Gujarat. On October 22, a 17-year-old boy passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest while participating in Garba in Kapadvanj, Kheda district.
The unusually high number of such cases had alerted the health authorities as well as the common public.
As per the reports, six people, including a woman and a Class 12 student, succumbed to heart attacks during Garba events. In addition to these six cases, 22 more people in the state lost their lives to heart attacks during the same period. In response to the increasing cases, Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel convened a meeting with leading heart specialists and doctors from the U N Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre. He had instructed them to gather relevant data and initiate research to determine the cause behind these casualties.
