A bag containing gelatin sticks was recovered from the outskirts of Bengaluru, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy was expected to pass on Sunday. PM Modi visited the tech city to take part in the celebrations marking 45 years of the Art of Living and the 70th birthday of its founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
As per the reports, the suspicious bag was found at Thathaguni near Kaggalipura. Upon conducting a search, gelatin sticks were found inside.
An anonymous caller alerted the police about the explosives. Following the alert, security agencies launched immediate searches at both locations.
While no suspicious material was found near HAL Airport, officers conducting checks around the Art of Living area recovered gelatin sticks near a bridge beside a compound wall along the Prime Minister’s route. The caller was subsequently taken into custody.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), along with senior officers, questioned the suspect to find out who placed the explosives at the spot. The officials also interrogated him on who supplied them and on who else is involved in the conspiracy. The suspect's parents were also questioned about the case.
Probe Underway
Upon investigation, the police found out that the suspect had made similar threat calls during previous VIP visits as well. He was detained and later released after police found that he had mental health issues.
However, this time, officials are treating the latest incident more seriously since explosive material was actually recovered after the warning call. Police suspect that two gelatin sticks may have been deliberately thrown near the route. They were also examining whether others were involved.
The police are also inquiring whether the explosives were connected to the people who oppose the Art Of Living Organisation. Police confirmed that the material was detected before the Prime Minister’s movement and said the investigation was underway.
