In response to the feedback sought by the Haryana government, developers said that traffic jams on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway negatively affect the charm of the Global City. The state government had asked for feedback on the project, which aims to establish a 1,000-acre mini-city along key highways in Gurgaon.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday met with 14 prominent developers, including Macrotech (Lodha), DLF, Adani, and L&T Realty, to discuss project suggestions. The meeting aimed to gather insights from industry experts. Apart from the aforementioned participants, RMZ, Signature, Eldeco, Hero Realty, Unity, Bestech, Prestige Construction, JLL, CBRE and ASF attended the meeting.

CM Saini said that the majority of the participants showed interest in the project. According to a report by the Times of India, officials said that the developers expressed interest but also raised concerns that commuters struggle with traffic jams on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway all the time, and not just during the peak hours. Developers complained that a crawling-like situation takes place, with speed barely crossing 20 kmph, on the expressway, specifically in the section between Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and Shankar Chowk in Gurgaon.

"The proximity to Delhi airport, supposed to be an advantage for Gurgaon, has turned into a nightmare for commuters," one of the developers who attended Friday's meeting was quoted in the report. "You can travel anytime, and there will be traffic on the expressway. Vehicles hardly move," Sudhir Sharma, who lives in Gurgaon's Sector 50 and travels for work to Delhi, was cited as saying.

What Is The Global City Project

Work on phase 1 of the project began late last year and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The initiative aims to develop 587 acres of land for a budget of Rs 940 crore. The Global City project was first launched in 2019 and did not see any development till 2023 -when Haryana govt decided to relaunch it. However, the project hasn’t been able to garner the expected response.

The Haryana government has long promoted the Global City project, a 1,000-acre mini-city spanning sectors 36, 36B, 37, and 37B. Strategically located between the Northern Peripheral Road and Southern Peripheral Road, the project boasts direct connectivity to key infrastructure like the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and Dwarka Expressway.

The project will be 30 minutes from the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport in Delhi, 20 minutes from the city's railway station, and ten minutes from the heliport and multimodal transit hub, ensuring easy access to key transport hubs.

The Project Attracted No Bids

The Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) has floated three tenders in the past two years to auction land for the Global City project, but none of them received any bids.

Government will introduce a single-window clearance to get all approvals in one go for industries and commercial centres. This includes environmental clearance, the CM said on Friday. CM Saini said that the project has the potential to attract investments worth Rs 1 lakh crore, and could benefit 16 lakh people apart from creating five lakh jobs.

HSIIDC said that the project is moving ahead and the agency is carrying out work in the first phase, the report added.
