Goa Shipyard Fire: At least two people were killed and four others were severely injured in a cylinder blast at Vijay Marine in Lotlim, South Goa. The injured were rushed to the Goa Medical College and Margao District Hospital for treatment.

According to police, the explosion occurred around 6 PM on Friday in an enclosed chamber of a ship undergoing repairs at a shipyard owned by Vijay Marine Services. An investigation is currently underway, the South Goa Police said.

“We received a call at around 6:10 pm informing us of a blast at Vijai Marine Services Shipyard. By the time we reached, the casualties had been shifted to the hospital. There was a blast at the electrical panel on the anchor deck of a ship that was under repair. The two who died were employed on a daily wage basis,” Hindustan Times quoted Antonio Moniz, the leading firefighter, as saying.

Moniz stated that the work on the 160-metre vessel was nearing completion, and the ship had already been lowered into the water after being painted. He further emphasised that only a thorough investigation could determine the cause of the explosion.

Revenue official Naguesh Naik said that two workers were declared dead at the hospital, while four others suffered severe burn injuries with approximately 80 per cent body affected. They are undergoing treatment at the hospital. Of them, one worker has been discharged. Efforts to reach officials of Vijay Marine Services for comment were unsuccessful despite multiple attempts.
