Gobi Manchurian, a popular fusion dish made of cauliflower, veggies and spicy sauce, has been banned in a Goan town. The Indo-Chinese dish, which is loved among the masses, has been banned in Mapusa due to health and hygiene reasons. The ban on the dish has been reportedly imposed in stalls and banquets which are located under the jurisdiction of the Mapusa civic body.
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) agreed to ban the dish, citing the use of synthetic colours, dubious sauces and even washing powder by some vendors, reported Times of India. The ban was proposed by Mapusa Collector Tarak Arolkar, who attended a temple feast where the dish was served to him last month.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Gobi Manchurian has faced a ban in Goa. In 2022, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) had prohibited the sale of the dish at the Vasco Week fair, following the orders of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Gobi Manchurian is a favourite among vegetarians, who consider it a tasty alternative to Chicken Manchurian. The dish is a part of Indo-Chinese cuisine, which combines Indian and Chinese flavours and ingredients.
The dish has its roots in the recipe of Chicken Manchurian, a dish created by Nelson Wang, a trailblazer of Chinese cuisine in Mumbai. In the 1970s, he was asked to make something new while working at the Cricket Club of India. He came up with Chicken Manchurian, which consisted of crispy chicken pieces coated in a spicy corn flour batter and tossed in a sauce of soy, vinegar, sugar and sometimes tomato.
