Good Friday 2025 Public Holiday: Good Friday, falling on April 18 this year, is one of the most significant days in Christianity, marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. While the day carries spiritual importance in the Christian religion, it is not a federal holiday in the US, However it is a gazetted holiday in India.

Good Friday 2025 Public Holiday: Banks And Schools Closed In Some States

School will be closed on April 18. However, students should be aware that, depending on local customs and cultural significance, some holidays might only be observed in particular states. Banks in states like Tripura, Assam, Rajasthan, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, and Srinagar would not be open for services. Customers can access services through online banking, SMS, and WhatsApp banking, among others. 

Government Offices And Stock Market To Remain Closed

As the day is observed as a gazetted holiday, banks, post offices, and municipal, state, and federal government offices are closed for the day.  The Indian stock exchanges, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain closed on Friday, April 18. Trading across all segments will be suspended for the day. 

Good Friday 2025 Holiday: Delhi Government Declares Dry Day

The Delhi government's Excise Department, in honour of Good Friday, has declared a dry day on April 18. As a result, on this day, all licensed liquor establishments—including stores, pubs, and dining establishments—are not to sell alcoholic beverages.

On Good Friday, Christians generally attend church services wearing black attire to signify mourning. From 12 PM to 3 PM, “Three Hours’ Agony” is observed, reflecting the time Jesus spent on the cross. Rituals include kissing the cross, offering prayers, and distributing sweet bread as a symbol of unity. Households are kept minimalistic by covering or removing any decoration in the house. The gravestones are cleaned in the cemeteries as a mark of respect.
