A diesel locomotive-hauled freight train travelled more than 70 kilometres without its drivers on Sunday. The incident took place between 7.25 am and 9 am when the train, loaded with chip stones, was on its way to Punjab from Jammu. Both drivers, loco pilot and assistant loco pilot of the goods trains were not on board, a railway official said.

A Northern Railway spokesperson stated that the train was at the Kathua railway station in Jammu for a driver change when it apparently started to move down a sloping track on the Jammu-Jalandhar section.

The train gained speed and crossed the state border before coming to a stop near Unchi Bassi railway station in Punjab, where it was halted with the assistance of sandbags. No casualty or damage to property has been reported, the officials said as reported by news agency PTI.

The train was stopped with the help of sandbags, the officials said. The spokesperson said that they were investigating if the train had been properly ''secured'' at Kathua on the sloping track and that a thorough inquiry was in progress. They alerted railway officials and staff along the route.

Sub-Inspector Ashok Kumar of the Government Railway Police (Jalandhar) said that they secured all rail-road crossings on the Jalandhar-Pathankot section after getting information about the train that was running without any driver.
