Gujarat: A one-year-old boy in Vadodara district, Gujarat, endured a prolonged illness for over a month and a half, with doctors initially diagnosing it as pneumonia. Despite his family's repeated visits to various private hospitals in search of a remedy, the child continued to suffer from persistent fever and a chronic cough.
After weeks of ineffective treatment, it was discovered that the real cause of his illness was not a respiratory infection, as originally thought, but a small LED bulb lodged deep in his windpipe, according to reports from NDTV.
The incident unfolded in Malsar village, Vadodara, where doctors at private hospitals had been treating the child for pneumonia. However, when his condition failed to improve, his family sought further medical attention at a government hospital in Gotri.
Doctors carried out a detailed examination and identified that the boy was suffering due to a foreign object lodged in his windpipe. After this discovery, a bronchoscopy was performed, which successfully removed the LED bulb.
During the examination, it became evident that there was an obstruction in the windpipe. An X-ray raised suspicion of a foreign body, and during the procedure, a bronchoscope was inserted. The doctors discovered a foreign object that appeared to be a piece of metal. Given the duration of the boy's illness, skin had formed around the object.
"Using our modern equipment, we were able to remove a bulb measuring just one centimetre. After its removal, we identified it as an LED bulb that had been swallowed by the child and had become lodged in his windpipe. Now, after removing the bulb, the child is healthy and will be discharged today," said Dr. Hiren Soni, Head of ENT at GMERS Hospital, Gotri.
