Ahmedabad: Electricity Bill in Gujarat is all set to get cheaper soon as the state government has announced a reduction of 15 paise per unit in the fuel surcharge on power consumption. The revised rates will take effect from July 1, 2025, benefiting nearly 1.75 crore consumers across all categories. This measure is expected to bring collective savings of over Rs 400 crore during the July-September quarter.

According to the TOI report, State energy and petrochemicals minister Kanu Desai said the fuel surcharge, officially called the fuel and power purchase price adjustment (FPPPA), will now be Rs 2.30 per unit, down from Rs 2.45. "This new rate will remain unchanged until the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) decides otherwise," he said.

He further said the reduction reflects the government’s efforts to control electricity purchase costs and pass on the benefits to households, industries, and farmers. "Stable purchase prices, better financial discipline, lower technical losses, and stronger infrastructure management have made this possible," Desai added.

The announcement adds to a series of relief measures introduced over the past 18 months. In January 2024, the fuel surcharge was reduced by 50 paise per unit, from Rs 3.35 to Rs 2.85. Another cut of 40 paise followed in October 2024, bringing it down to Rs 2.45 per unit,  a rate that was maintained through April-June 2025. With the latest July adjustment, Gujarat’s fuel surcharge has now been reduced by more than Rs 1 per unit within a year and a half.
