A 41-year-old man has sought a divorce from his wife in the Gujarat High Court on the grounds of cruelty. He alleges that his wife brings stray dogs into their home. Additionally, the husband has accused his wife of orchestrating a prank call about an extra-marital affair, a prank which he claims raised serious questions about his reputation in society.
According to the husband's appeal, the couple married in 2006, and his troubles began when his wife brought a stray dog into their flat while living in a society where keeping dogs was prohibited.
Neighbors Also Became Hostile
Following this, she brought in more stray dogs and demanded that he cook for them, clean up after them, and take care of them. He stated that one dog bit him while trying to push him off the bed.
The husband said that the presence of the dogs also turned their neighbors against them. He alleged that after his wife joined an animal rights group, she repeatedly filed police complaints against other people, summoned him to the police station for help, and abused and insulted him when he refused. He claimed that this stress damaged his health and, as a result, caused him to suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Husband Fled To Bengaluru
The husband stated that he fled to Bengaluru, but his wife continued to harass him. He filed for divorce in an Ahmedabad family court in 2017, but the wife defended herself by arguing that he had abandoned her and that he was the one who had introduced her to the animal rights movement.
The wife also presented photographs of the husband hugging and kissing the dogs. In February 2024, the family court dismissed his petition, stating, "Considering the evidence, the petitioner has failed to prove that the respondent treated him with cruelty or abandoned him."

Prank Call Not Grounds For Divorce: Court
Regarding the prank call allegation, the (family) court had said, "This cannot be a ground for seeking divorce from the respondent (wife)."
The husband, appealing to the High Court through advocate Bhargav Hasurkar, argued that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. He offered Rs 15 lakh in alimony, while his wife remained adamant on her demand for Rs 2 crore.
Her lawyer responded that the husband's family runs a resort abroad and that he should pay an appropriate amount. Before a bench of Justice Sangita Vishen and Justice Nisha Thakore, the High Court scheduled the next hearing for December 1 and directed, "Advocates appearing for the respective parties to obtain respective instructions."
