In a deeply disturbing case reported from Bhavnagar, Gujarat, a 29-year-old man allegedly raped his younger sister twice and inflicted burn injuries on her all because he was enraged by her consensual relationship with another man.

The accused, married and employed as a driver, could not tolerate the fact that his 22-year-old sister was in a relationship, and chose to respond with horrifying violence, according to the police.

Police officials revealed that the victim had been in a relationship with a man from their village for nearly three years, a fact known to her brother. Rather than respecting her autonomy, the man used this information to blackmail her and assert control. “He exploited this knowledge to intimidate and ultimately assault her,” a police officer told NDTV.

Raped Her Twice While Her Wife Was...

The first rape reportedly took place on July 13, when the accused's wife was away visiting her parents. Police said he threatened his sister at knifepoint before sexually assaulting her. A month later on August 22, the second incident took place under similar circumstances, while his wife was again not home.

During the second sexual assault, the man allegedly stubbed a lit cigarette into his sister’s right thigh, leaving visible burn marks, authorities said.

According to NDTV, the woman approached the state’s women’s helpline after enduring the second assault. Once the case was brought to light, the police intervened quickly and registered an FIR at the Bhavnagar police station.

Police have since arrested the accused and carried out medical examinations of both the victim and the alleged perpetrator. “The knife used in the crime and the clothes worn by the accused have been recovered,” said a police officer.
